Description

The Council House Gatehouse and Gateway in Shrewsbury consists of a house and gatehouse, with the house likely dating from the early 16th century and the gatehouse dated 1620. The structure is timber-framed with brick panel infill and has plain tiled roofs. The original building to the north is low, with two storeys and probably a two-unit plan. It features framing in square panels with close studding in the gable, and has casement windows in both the gable and side walls, along with an axial stack.

A later wing, probably from the early 17th century, has been added at a right angle to the rear. This wing is framed in small square panelling and includes decorative quatrefoil panels in the gable, as well as two 4-light mullioned and transomed windows in the rear wall. The entrance is located in a lean-to porch against the gable, which was likely added in the early 20th century.

The gatehouse block adjoins the south-west corner of the main range and is dated 1620. It features a wide gateway flanked by fluted Corinthian columns on high bases, possibly with the original gates still in place. Above the gateway is a single window and a high gabled dormer. The gatehouse is framed in decorative small square panels with cusped quatrefoils. It has a 4-light mullioned and transomed window, with enriched paired round-arched panels below it and additional decoration surrounding the dormer window above. The tie-beam and barge-boards are adorned with vine-scroll decoration. On the street side, there are two 3-light mullioned windows with paired round-arched enriched panels beneath, along with two high dormer windows above. A 3-light Gothick window was inserted in the 19th century alongside the gateway.
