Description
The Heighington War Memorial is a granite Celtic cross approximately 4 meters tall, located at the southern edge of the churchyard of the Church of St Michael, which is a Grade I-listed building. It is positioned near several other listed structures and overlooks The Green. The front face of the cross features intricate relief carvings, including hemispherical bosses on the wheel-head and scrolling vines along the shaft. The shaft rises from a tapering pedestal that bears the inscription "THE WOMEN’S/ THANKOFFERING 1918."
The pedestal is set on a three-stepped base made from a different type of stone. The lower steps are integrated into the churchyard wall, which has a small metal grill closing the gap. The top step of the base displays details of the Second World War, with the dates 1939 – 1945 inscribed on the chamfered tread and ten names listed on the riser. An inscription on the riser of the middle step reads “WE WILL REMEMBER THEM,” while the bottom step features the word "PAX" on its riser.
Two stone plaques are embedded in the churchyard wall on either side of the gap. The left plaque lists the names from 1914 – 1918 (9 NAMES), and the right plaque also lists names from 1914 – 1918 (8 NAMES).
