Description

Castle Hill is a house located on Church Lane in Middleton One Row, likely built in the mid to late 18th century and early 19th century, with several additions and alterations made in the late 19th century. The structure is made of roughcast brick and rubble, topped with pantiled roofs and features roughcast brick chimney stacks. It has a linear layout divided into three sections and stands two storeys tall with a total of six bays.

The central section, which may be the original part of the house, features a six-panel door with an overlight set in a wooden doorcase on the right side, and a late 19th-century canted bay window on the left. Above, there are two square 12-pane sash windows. The roof is steeply pitched with raised verges and has chimney stacks at both ends.

The left section may have originally consisted of a one-bay and a two-bay cottage. It has replacement sashes on the ground floor and three 12-pane sashes above. The roof also has raised verges and chimney stacks at the left end and at the junction with the central section.

The right section is a single wide bay that includes a late 19th-century canted bay window on the ground floor and a gabled half dormer with a pair of 3-pane sashes. Its roof is steeply pitched with raised verges and a chimney stack at the right end.

There are late 19th to early 20th-century additions at the rear of the left section, but these are not considered of special interest.
