Description

St Laurence's War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with additions for the Second World War and the Iraq War. It is made from pink and grey conglomerate and is located at the entrance to the former churchyard of the Church of St Lawrence. The memorial features a free-standing, roughly-hewn Celtic cross on a short, tapering shaft, which is set upon a two-tiered pedestal accessed by two stone steps.

Carved in half relief over the crosspiece of the cross are a wreath and an eroded sword. The dedications and names are presented in applied lead lettering. The dedication to the fallen of the First World War is inscribed on the front face of the shaft, stating: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF OUR MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919." Below this dedication, the names of the fallen are listed in two columns separated by a vertical line on the front face of the upper pedestal. The dedication for the Second World War is located on the left side of the upper pedestal, reading: "TO THE GLORIOUS DEAD 1939-1946," followed by names. Additionally, the name of a single Royal Military Policeman who fell in Iraq in 2003 has been added to the riser of the lower pedestal.
