Description

The memorial is a war memorial cross situated in the churchyard of St Laurence’s Church, near a sundial and tomb, all of which are listed buildings. Constructed of sandstone, the cross is tall and stands on an octagonal plinth. The cross head is pierced with trefoils at its arms, forming a wheel shape, and depicts a figure of Christ crucified. The head is set upon a moulded collar that rises from a plain, octagonal shaft.

The octagonal plinth has a slightly projecting cornice and recessed front and rear faces. These recessed areas feature blind arcading, ornamented with a shield bearing a Latin cross appearing to be suspended via a buckled strap. The other six sides of the plinth contain slate plaques displaying the names of those who fell in the First World War, arranged alphabetically. A dedicatory inscription wraps around the base of the plinth, beginning on the front face, and reads: “1914 – 1918/ IN MEMORY/ OF ALL THE/ MEN OF THIS/ PLACE WHO/ GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR.”

The plinth sits upon a three-stepped octagonal base with slightly projecting treads. The front riser of the upper step is inscribed with the dates 1939 – 1945, with slate plaques below recording the names of those who died in the Second World War on the middle step’s riser. The front riser of the lowest step bears an inscription detailing the memorial’s construction: “ERECTED 1921/ ARCHITECT H.S. ROGERS OXFORD/ SCULPTOR A. MILLER CHIPPING CAMPDEN/ ERECTED BY F. UNSWORTH FRODSHAM/ ASSISTANT MASON J. RUTTER FRODSHAM.”
