Description
Rowan Cottage is a house located on Constitution Hill in Southwold, dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original layout was L-shaped, but it was extended over the rear courtyard in the 19th century. The exterior is finished in painted brick and features a roof made of black-glazed pantiles, with two brick chimney stacks on the front slope.
The house has two storeys and a dormer attic, with a two-window front. To the right, there is a six-panelled door beneath an overlight with glazing bars. A small inserted casement window is located to the left, and above the door, there is a 6/6 unhorned sash window. To the left of the elevation, there is a late 19th-century full-height canted bay window featuring 2/2 and 6/6 unhorned sashes. The dormer is fitted with 20th-century casement windows.
Inside, a ground-floor sunk-quadrant bridging beam, which terminates in jewelled tongue stops, defines the width of the 17th-century principal room. There is an early 19th-century stick-baluster staircase that has been inserted. The rear yard has been built over, which has left the former external cellar access now internal and blocked.
