Description
The Grange Hotel is a large four-square villa that dates from the early to mid-19th century and was formerly part of Southend Roman Catholic School. It stands three storeys tall and has three bays, constructed of pinkish brick. The building features a deep stone eaves cornice and a blocking course, along with a hipped slated roof that has a fairly low pitch and a range of chimneys along the ridge.
On the north side, the ground floor projects and includes tripartite windows that are flanked by pilaster-and-entablature treatments, as well as a stuccoed central porch in antis. The other windows are recessed sashes with glazing bars set in stone architraves, with eared detailing on the first floor. Some of these windows also feature a pulinated frieze and cornice.
There is a near-contemporary extension to the right that is two storeys and has a basement, featuring three windows with gauged brick arches and stucco-lined reveals, while maintaining a similar style to the main building. Additionally, two modern windows have been inserted into the main block. This building was the home of Joseph Pease until his death in 1872.
