Description
These are two early to mid-18th century houses, numbers 38 and 40 Coniscliffe Road. Each house is two storeys high and originally had three windows. Number 38 is constructed of handmade pinkish brick, now painted, while number 40 has raised, rusticated quoins. Number 40 features a very steeply pitched roof, renewed with modern ridged tiles, and partially rebuilt end chimneys. Both houses have replacement sash windows set in stone architraves with stone sills. A similar architrave, incorporating a frieze, cornice, and blocking course, frames the four-panel front door, which has a cornice head and an oblong fanlight. The roof of number 38 has been renewed in asbestos tiles. Number 38 also has replaced sash windows in flush wood architraves on the first floor, with the central window blocked. The ground floor of number 38 includes a segmental arched carriage entrance leading to a yard, and a more recent shop front. On the right side is a modern shop front. Long wings extend to the rear of both properties, and have been significantly altered. The rear gable elevations largely retain their original appearance.
