Description
Nos 4 to 16 (even) and the King's Head Hotel above shops is a building from 1893 located on the east side of Northgate. It features a robust late Victorian facade with three storeys and an attic, comprising seven bays. The northern bay is a four-storey tower, accompanied by a low, three-storey half-bay that once held the yard gateway. The structure is built of red brick with terra-cotta dressings and has a very steeply pitched roof made of graduated Lakeland slates, complete with brick ridge stacks. The roof slightly projects in a hip over each bay, except for the third and sixth bays. The attic windows are set within elaborate shaped gables, showcasing Dutch Renaissance type Orders and fan-moulded pediments. An enriched top entablature rests on brick giant pilasters that have terra-cotta capitals. The second-floor windows feature balustraded balconies that rest on first-floor oriels with curved sides; some of these are linked by balconies and all are richly decorated. The ground floor contains modern shops.
