Description

The U-plan farmbuildings and gin-gang located north of Peartree House date from the late 18th century to early 19th century and consist of several constructions. They are built from coursed and squared limestone with pantiled roofs featuring stone-flagged eaves. The buildings form a U-shape around a fold yard on three sides, with a central threshing barn flanked by byres. The barn is two stories high and has three bays, featuring a central Dutch door facing the yard and two rows of blocked breathers on both the front and rear. Its steeply-pitched roof has raised verges with reverse-stepped gables. The single-storey byres on either side have three bays each, with opposing doorways and similar roof and gable details. The front wall of the right byre has been rebuilt and includes three elliptical arches made of brick. The single-storey ranges at right angles to the barn have blocked elliptical arches on their front returns and hipped roofs. The large gin-gang at the rear of the barn has a polygonal end, rectangular-plan piers, and low linking walls, topped with a semi-pyramidal roof and stone ridge tiles. The fold yard is covered by three 20th-century pitched roofs, which are not of special interest. Overall, this is a well-preserved and relatively unaltered group of farm buildings.
