Description

Stooperdale Offices is an office building constructed in 1911, designed by William Bell for the North-Eastern Railway Company. It features a ferro-concrete frame clad with Normanton brick and terracotta, topped with Welsh slate roofs and various tall square chimney stacks, all in the Baroque Revival style.

The main facade has a three-storey central block with seven windows, flanked by setback two-and-a-half-storey wings, each with seven windows, and projecting three-storey pavilions with four windows. All windows are glazing bar sashes. The central block showcases banded rustication and central double doors within an elaborate classical surround, set beneath a large porte cochère supported by sets of three Roman Doric columns at each corner. Above the central three windows is a four-columned portico with a pediment that extends through both upper floors. The central three windows feature prominent terracotta surrounds, while the remaining sash windows have plain surrounds with elongated keystones. The central block is topped with a bold dentilated cornice and a balustraded parapet, with the date "1911" inscribed on the pediment.

The flanking wings have slightly projecting central windows set in elaborate rusticated door surrounds, with three sashes on either side, above seven sashes, all featuring projecting keystones. Above is a plain brick parapet with two- and three-light dormer windows behind. The pavilions have pairs of central windows with rusticated surrounds surmounted by segmental pediments, and beyond are single sashes in plain surrounds. The upper central windows are flanked by rusticated pilasters, and all sashes have prominent keystones. The pavilions are topped with bold cornices.
