Description
Abbey View is a house dating from 1929, designed by W.Y. Jones for T.H. Burbridge. It is constructed with a timber frame and rendered infill, topped with a roof of French tiles and a pebble-dash rendered chimney. The house is built in a vernacular revival style, arranged over three storeys and an attic, with two bays. The right bay is timber-framed and set under a returned gable. The ground floor of this bay is set back at an acute angle to the building line. A Jacobean-style door is situated on the right, featuring a small round light within a carved sun motif, all within a chamfered surround with tongue stops. Above the door is a full-width three-light casement window with opening transom lights, all beneath a moulded bressumer supporting a jettied first floor. Shaped wood brackets support a two-storey oriel, flanked by two-light windows on the first floor, with large diagonal braces above. Further shaped wood brackets support the attic storey, which features a blind quatrefoil below a two-light window. The left bay is plainer, containing a three-light casement on the ground floor, and two-light windows on the upper floors. These windows have painted projecting sills and dripmould lintels with lead glazing. A square-headed two-light dormer is also present. A massive base forms the left end chimney. High-quality wrought-iron work is visible, including strap hinges. A boot-scraper is situated in the angle formed with the house on the right, and a rainwater head is also present.
