Description
No. 51 South Street is a house dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It features a rough-rendered front with ashlar dressings, a brick gable on the right side, and a brick rear. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has brick chimneys. The building stands two storeys high with attics and has two bays. There are steps leading up to a three-over-three panelled door on the left, which is set in a raised stone surround and topped with a large hood supported by wrought-iron brackets. Above the door is a two-light horizontal sliding sash window. On the right side, there is a two-storey canted bay that includes horizontal sliding sashes and a pent roof with slate-hung cheeks. A large recessed attic window was inserted around 1970 in the steeply-pitched roof, which has slightly swept eaves. The right end features a chimney. At the rear, the wing displays tumbled-in brickwork in the gable and a horizontal sliding sash window beneath an old wood lintel.
