Description
No. 56 South Street is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brick with a rendered ashlar plinth and side steps, featuring painted ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The building has three storeys and three bays. There are two flights of side steps leading to a central six-panelled door with an overlight that has radiating glazing bars, all set within an architrave. The door has a wedge stone lintel above it, as do the sash windows that have glazing bars and projecting stone sills. A high plinth includes a pierced cellar hatch on the right side. The façade features two brick floor bands that are interrupted by lintels, and there are end brick chimneys. A plain wrought iron handrail, supported by square posts with rounded ends, runs up both flights of steps and across the landing, and there is a boot-scraper attached at the top.
