Description
The Dowson tomb, located approximately 3 metres south of the Baptist Chapel in Hamsterley, is a Grade II listed headstone dating from 1777. It commemorates George Dowson, who died at the age of 47, and his son Joseph, who passed away in 1796 at the age of 45 due to an accident involving a grindstone at Bedburn Mill. The tomb is made of sandstone and stands about one metre high, featuring a shaped top and a well-cut inscription. The inscription for George is flanked by scrolls, while the inscription for Joseph notes his death and includes the location of Mayland. The tomb has been relocated to the side of the graveyard and is included in the listing for its historical interest.
