Description

This building is a barn located to the northeast of the Village Hall in Hamsterley. It is likely from the early to mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The structure is made of sandstone rubble, featuring quoins and ashlar dressings. The roofs are covered with pantiles, with some sections having stone at the eaves and a rear slope covered in corrugated iron. The rear wing has a stone-flagged roof.

The barn consists of two parts, with the left side being taller. It has two storeys and a total of six bays. The left part has quoins on the right side and features a boarded vehicle door on the left, which is set under an iron lintel. Above this door is a wood lintel that extends over a central two-light wood-mullioned casement window, which has cast iron lattice glazing bars. There are similar windows above this on the first floor, also with wood lintels, and in the right part at the centre of the first floor.

The right part of the barn has boarded doors in the outer bays, set under flat stone lintels with irregular-block jambs. There is also a side stone staircase leading to the first floor of the third bay. On the first floor, there are two ventilation slits on the left. The roof of the second part is more steeply pitched, with stone flags at the swept eaves. A square chimney with a top string is located on the right side of the first part.

The left return of the barn features stone steps leading to a two-panel door on the first floor. The right return has a small square window with a large flat lintel on the ground floor and ventilation slits in the gable peak. The rear elevation includes a lower two-storey gabled wing attached to the first part of the barn.
