Description
Hamsterley Baptist Chapel is a Baptist chapel and Sunday school dated 1774, as indicated by the inscription over the door. It is constructed from roughly-coursed and squared sandstone with quoins, while the fourth bay features coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. The roof is made of synthetic stone, with stone gable coping and a brick chimney. The entrance has a round-headed keyed surround, with the key dated 1774 and inscribed with "BETHEL" in Hebrew, leading to a three-panel door with a two-pane fanlight in the third bay. To the left of the door are two large sashes with glazing bars, and to the right, there are quoins. In the fourth bay, there is a large sash with fine glazing bars, a flat stone lintel, and a sill. The gable coping sits on a moulded kneeler above the quoins, with the chimney located on the left.
The rear elevation features a door from the Sunday school to the graveyard, along with a first-floor horizontal sliding sash in the Sunday school that has broad glazing bars.
Inside, there is a stair opposite the door leading to left and right galleries, with a moulded handrail supported by stick balusters and carved tread ends. A later tongue-and-groove partition is located against the left balustrade and the wall to the right of the stair. The chapel retains many original features, including side steps leading to a panelled pulpit, with a pedimented panel as the pulpit back situated between windows. The pews, which have shaped ends and panelled backs, flank the space in front of the pulpit, where the original font is said to be in the floor, and under the gallery, which also contains similar pews. There are coat pegs along the sides and back of the gallery, and a panelled dado in the entrance passage features a small hinged flap to the chapel. Additionally, there is a small panelled cupboard in the front wall beside the left gable.
