Description
The Hamsterley War Memorial is a tall sandstone structure located on a green at the east end of the village, enclosed by a low, coursed stone wall with corner and centre piers. The memorial features a small cross head that rises from a moulded collar on a tapering shaft, which is set atop a square pedestal with a pedimented top. This pedestal is supported by a four-stepped base.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads, "THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY,/ THEIR SOULS TO GOD/ AND THEIR NAMES/ TO POSTERITY." On the rear, it includes "A TRIBUTE OF HONOUR" followed by five names and the dates 1914 – 1919. Additionally, three names of local men who emigrated to Canada and Australia and served in the Commonwealth forces during the First World War are listed on one side, while the names of those who served in the Second World War are recorded on the last face. The name of a soldier who died in Afghanistan in 2013 is inscribed on the face of the upper step of the base.
