Description

The guide post opposite No. 1 South View Cottage in Hamsterley is a cast iron structure, likely dating from the third quarter of the 19th century. It stands approximately 1.7 metres high and features a round post topped with a ball finial. On the west side, it displays a low relief inscription reading 'BARNARD CASTLE 12 MILE' and 'WOODLAND 4 1/2'. The south-east side indicates distances to 'BISHOP AUCKLAND 7 1/4 MILES', 'WEST AUCKLAND 5', and 'EVENWOOD 5 1/2', with these signs secured to the post by bolts and flanges. This guide post is similar to one located in Witton le Wear, Crook, and Hunwick.
