Description
Hamsterley House is a mid-18th century house with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings, and has a synthetic tile roof with stone gable coping.
The south elevation features a renewed central door within a plain stone surround. Late 19th century sash windows are found in the outer bays, with the ground floor windows being larger and featuring flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. A narrower 20th century window with a similar lintel and sill is located above the door. The roof has corniced end chimneys, and gable copings on cyma-moulded kneelers, the left of which has been altered. The rear elevation, facing the street, has a large, central round-headed stair window with ogee-intersecting glazing bars, and a 20th century door.
Inside, the house has L-hinges on boarded doors leading to a storage space under the stair. Lower six-panel doors are present in other rooms. The altered staircase has a moulded handrail on stick balusters. A dentilled chimney-piece cornice is visible on the first floor. A left-hand kitchen extension is not considered to be of historical interest.
