Description

The tomb of Sir William Pudsey, located 1 metre south of the Church of St. Mary, is a chest tomb dating from around 1500. It is made of weather-worn grey limestone and features low sides. The south and east sides display raised central shields. The single slab has a chamfered upper edge and bears a raised inscription in Gothic lettering that reads: "HIC IACEUT DNS WILLMS PUDCEY MILES ET ELIZABETH UXOR EIUS QUORU' AIARU PROPICIETUR DEUS AMEN." There is also a later inscription cut into the slab, which states: "WILLIAM CRADOCK ESQR DIED THE 6TH OF JULY 1736 AGED" (the age is illegible).
