Description
The Field Barn and attached byre, located 50 metres southeast of High Green Farmhouse, is a mid-19th century barn with a late 19th century byre. It is constructed from squared sandstone rubble and features stone-flagged roofs along with a stone chimney stack. The barn is two stories high and consists of three wide bays, with alternating quoins. The right bay includes the byre, which has living quarters above it.
The barn has a central elliptical archway with a pair of boarded doors, flanked by breathers. There are boarded openings in the first-floor end bays, with the left opening set in a flush surround. The roof has coped gables and a ridge stack on the right, which includes a top band and water table. A Dutch door in a flush surround is located on the right return.
The one-storey byre is set back and has three bays, featuring a central Dutch door and flanking casements. There is a lean-to addition at the rear of the barn, covered with a corrugated asbestos roof, which is not of special interest. This building is a large and relatively unaltered example of a typical Teesdale field barn.
