Description
Lune Bridge is a road bridge over the River Lune, built in the late 18th century. The upstream side was widened around 1868, coinciding with the construction of the Lune Viaduct. The bridge is made of sandstone ashlar, featuring rebuilt parapets and a snecked, rock-faced upstream side.
The downstream segmental arch has flush voussoirs and is flanked by battered buttresses, with a chamfered band above the arch. The upstream segmental arch has projecting rock-faced voussoirs. The parapets have segmental copings. The attached end walls are flat-coped on the north side, measuring about 9.0 metres long and curved in plan. The south-east wall ends in a circular pier with a domical cap, while the south-west wall ends in a rectangular pier.
This bridge is noted for its group value and spans the parishes of Holwick, Middleton, and Lunedale.
