Description

The Wilkinson tomb, located approximately 2 meters south of Whitworth Parish Church, is a headstone dating from around 1727. It commemorates three sons of John Wilkinson of Old Park. The tomb is made of sandstone ashlar and stands about 0.6 meters high. Its shaped top edge features fruit and leaves, while the double-scroll-shaped top has an inscribed east panel listing the names of Thomas and Jerard, aged 7 and 4, who died on May 27 and May 31, respectively, and William, aged 2, who died on June 21, all in 1727. The reverse side of the tomb has a central inscription reading 'Memento Mori' between recessed panels. The lower panel includes a low-relief hour-glass and crossed bones, while the upper panel features a deeper relief of three children's heads and shoulders emerging from large leaves, with similar leaves rising between the figures, suggesting they are growing out of the ground.
