Description
The Byers Green War Memorial is a tall granite structure located at the junction of Church Street and Hagg Road, directly across from the former National School and Schoolmaster’s House, which is also listed as Grade II. The memorial features a Maltese cross that rises from a tapered shaft with a moulded foot ring, all standing on a corniced plinth with a moulded base. The edges of the plinth are chamfered, and its four faces are polished. At the front of the base, there is a low grill designed to hold wreaths against the memorial. The entire structure is elevated on a low stone step, which is enclosed by an iron rail.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BYERS GREEN WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY DURING THE GREAT WAR. 1914 - 'THEIR BODIES ARE BURIED IN PEACE, BUT THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.'"
Names of those who served in the First World War are inscribed on either side of the plinth. The inscription for the Second World War is located on the rear face and reads: "1939 – 1945 (9 NAMES) 'THEIR SEED SHALL REMAIN FOR EVER AND THEIR GLORY SHALL NOT BE BLOTTED OUT.'"
