Description
Nos. 38, 39, and 40 Claypath are three houses built in the late 17th century or early 18th century. They are constructed of English garden wall bond brick, primarily in six courses with one course, and feature painted ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs. Each house is three storeys tall and consists of two bays.
At No. 38, there is a renewed door on the left set in a deep reveal with a stone surround and a shaped top panel. No. 39 has a six-panelled door with an overlight to the right, accessed by one step, and is framed by deep panelled reveals and pilasters with fluted necking that support a cornice. No. 40 features a flushed door on the left with an overlight in a similar doorcase, which includes a patera on the frieze.
No. 38 has canted bays that rise three storeys, while No. 40 has two storeys in its canted bay. The space between floors at No. 38 is adorned with boarded panels. No. 39 features tripartite sash windows on each floor, which have header-course lintels and projecting stone sills. No. 40 has renewed windows with similar sills, some also featuring header-course lintels. Both Nos. 39 and 40 have brick floor bands. The roofs of the first two houses have swept eaves, while No. 40 has a steeply-pitched roof. There are foot-scraper recesses beside the doors, and each house has an end chimney.
