Description
The Iley tomb, located approximately 28 metres south of the Church of St Thomas, is a Grade II listed headstone dating from around 1845. It commemorates members of the Iley family who died between 1845 and 1855. The tomb features a tall sandstone slab with a shaped top and a finely-cut inscription that reads:
"The sprightly Youth ah mournfull tale to tell/Crush'd by a ponderous load which on him fell/Awhile he liv'd oppressed with pain and grief/Till heaven the patient sufferer sent relief/Death's icy hand the well blown flower crops/And blasts the aged parents future hopes/ IN MEMORY OF MARGARET/WIFE OF JAMES ILEY/ POSTMASTER OF STANHOPE/WHO DIED MARCH 18TH 1845/AGED 66 YEARS/ALSO GEORGE ILEY THEIR SON, WHO/DIED JUNE 12TH 1848 AGED 27 (?) YEARS/ALSO OF THE ABOVE JAMES ILEY/POST MASTER WHO DIED JANUARY 21ST 1855/AGED 77 YEARS."
