Description

The Leadgate War Memorial is located on Durham Road, within a rectangular enclosure defined by a low kerb that features new ornamental railings and a gate, near the entrance to Eden Park (Leadgate Football Ground). The memorial consists of a granite cross, approximately 4 meters tall, designed as a Celtic cross that rises from a tapering pedestal. This pedestal is set on a granite base, which in turn sits on a stone step surrounded by slab paving. The front face of the wheel-head of the cross is decorated with interlace patterns carved in relief.

The front of the cross shaft has a slightly raised polished panel that displays the main dedicatory inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THE URBAN AREA OF LEADGATE, WHO FELL IN THE WAR OF 1914 – 1918." The front and sides of the pedestal also feature raised and polished areas that list the names of those commemorated in columns.

On the front face of the base, there is an inscription that reads, “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS,” with additional names recorded on the sides. At the rear of the memorial cross, a stone tablet affixed to a concrete base includes the inscription "THOSE WHO FELL DURING THE WAR 1939 – 1945" along with four names, while a further 46 names are listed on the opposite side.
