Description
The war memorial at the Civic Centre is a Grade II listed structure, erected in 1925 to commemorate the First World War, with later additions for the Second World War and the Korean War. It is made of stone and features a small wheel cross atop a tall, slender octagonal column, which stands on a plinth adorned with a wreath in half relief on two of its four sides. This is supported by a stepped pedestal.
The memorial honors 301 men from Consett who died in the First World War, 175 men from the Second World War, and one soldier from the Korean War. The front inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CONSETT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE." The names of the fallen are carved on the front, sides, and rear faces of the upper pedestal, while the names from the Second World War are inscribed on the lower pedestal.
Originally unveiled on September 30, 1925, by Major General F.A. Dudgeon, C.B., the memorial was first located at Ainsley Terrace in Consett before being moved to its current site in the mid-20th century. The memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of these tragic events on the local community and holds significant cultural and historical importance.
