Description

The Bere Ferrers War Memorial is located above the road on Fore Street, at the junction with the path leading to the Church of St Andrew, which is a Grade I-listed building. This memorial features a tall granite wheel-head cross that rises from a tapering square plinth, which is set on a three-stepped base and a high circular platform. The middle step has a low metal railing designed to hold wreaths and floral tributes.

The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." This is followed by the names of nine individuals. The names of other fallen soldiers are inscribed on the sides of the plinth. On the rear of the plinth, there is a dedication to the soldiers of the Second World War, which states: "WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945. IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN.'" This inscription includes the names of twenty-one individuals.

Additionally, there is a tablet shaped like a scrolled roll of honour positioned on the circular platform, leaning against the lower step of the base. This tablet commemorates the New Zealand soldiers who were killed in a tragic accident at Bere Ferrers Station on September 24th, 1917, and lists ten names. All inscriptions on the memorial are made with applied metal letters.
