Description
The Bere Alston War Memorial is located outside Bere Alston Parish Hall. It is a tall granite wheel-head cross that rises from a tapering square plinth, which is set on a three-stepped base and circular platform. The middle step features a low metal railing designed to hold wreaths and floral tributes.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE GALLANT MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." This inscription includes nine names. Additional names are listed on the sides of the plinth. On the rear of the plinth, there is a dedication to New Zealand soldiers that states: "IN MEMORY OF THE NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS WHO WERE KILLED IN A TRAGIC ACCIDENT AT BERE FERRERS STATION ON SEPTEMBER 24TH 1917," which includes ten names.
At the front of the memorial, a tablet shaped like a scrolled roll of honour is positioned on the lowest steps of the base. Its inscription reads: "WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945 IN THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM. 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN.'" All inscriptions are made with applied metal letters.
