Description

The Iveston War Memorial is a granite Celtic cross commemorating those who died in the First World War, erected around 1919 on a green to the south side of Iveston Lane. The cross, approximately 3 metres tall, features intricate carved relief interlace patterns on its front face. It rises from a tapering pedestal, which itself sits upon a stone step. A square stone kerb originally enclosed the cross and carried railings, though these are now absent.

The principal inscription on the front of the pedestal reads “ERECTED BY THE / INHABITANTS OF THE VILLAGE / TO THE ETERNAL MEMORY OF / THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR KING & COUNTRY / DURING THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918.” The names of those who died in the First World War are listed on the sides of the pedestal. A further inscription on the step reads “1939 – 1945 / (NAMES).”

A stone slab of St Ives stone sits in front of the cross within the memorial enclosure. The enclosure is demarcated by plain metal bars supported by coursed stone piers, with a gate facing the lane.
