Description
Hurbuck Farmhouse is a farmhouse that possibly dates from the late 16th century, with early 17th century and 19th century alterations. The building is dated 1633 for TH and MH, and 1877 for EB, which can be found over the doors. It is constructed of thinly-rendered sandstone rubble, featuring a boulder plinth, quoins, and ashlar dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has rendered gable copings along with yellow brick chimneys. The farmhouse is designed in an L-plan and consists of two storeys with five irregular bays.
On the right side, the three-bay section has a moulded flat-Tudor-arched blocked door in the first bay, which has large irregular-block jambs, and a window has been inserted. Above the door, there is an inscription reading TH:MH, dated 1633. To the left of the door is a square window, and there are 20th-century windows above the door and in the second bay, all featuring flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The narrow third bay is blank. The two higher bays on the left have a 20th-century door under a dated flat stone lintel on the right, and a canted bay window on the left. The first floor has two windows with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills.
The left return shows a boulder plinth, and the rear gable has throughstones. Inside, the walls on the returns and the rear of the right three bays are three feet thick, and there are massive boxed-in beams. The roof features an A-truss with a massive rear through purlin, although the front purlin has been renewed.
