Description
The ice house located northwest of Greencroft Cottage was built in the early 19th century and served Greencroft Hall, which has since been demolished. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and features an earth mound. The north entrance has a round-headed shape with voussoirs and a rebated surround, including a hinge-pin on the right side, while the sloping wall on either side retains the mound. The south entrance, situated at a lower level, also has a round-headed arch and is flanked by retaining walls made of thinner stones, with some areas patched in brick. Inside, there is a brick-vaulted tunnel that steps down to a brick-barrel-vaulted chamber, with a partly-blocked floor approximately one meter below the tunnel.
