Description
The Whitfield Tomb, located approximately 4 metres north of the Baptist Chapel in Hamsterley, dates from around 1821 and commemorates Rev. Charles Whitfield. This headstone is made of sandstone and stands about 1.2 metres high, featuring a shaped top. It displays a low-relief urn above a well-cut, though partly eroded, inscription that reads: 'Rev. Charles Whitfield, Pastor of the Baptist Congregation of this place, his immortal Spirit ascended to GOD, July 18 1821 in the 73 Year of his Age, as A Friend as A Christian, And as A M... of the Gosple (sic), He conducted ..., uch a Manner/as justly to des... to enjoy/the most ...' Rev. Whitfield was the minister during the construction of the Baptist Chapel and played a significant role in the evangelical revival.
