Description
No. 25 Old Elvet is a house from the mid to late 18th century that has undergone some alterations. It features incised stucco with a plinth and a Welsh slate roof, which has rendered brick copings and a chimney. The building has three storeys and three bays, arranged irregularly. The entrance consists of a five-panel door set in a hollow-chamfered surround, topped with a swell frieze and a stone cornice hood supported by modern iron brackets. The outer bays are canted and two storeys high, with stair windows located at intermediate levels to the left of the door. All the windows are sashes, with some dating from the early 19th century, although they lack glazing bars. The chimney is located at the right end, and there are gable copings on kneelers, along with two wide dormers from the 20th century. A boot scraper recess is situated by the door.
Inside, the house is reported to have two staircases: one is an open-string staircase that is dog-legged, featuring a ramped handrail supported by column and vase balusters; the second staircase, located at the rear, incorporates reused parts from the lower flight of the main stair.
The building is included for its group value.
