Description
New Close Farmhouse, along with its stable, byre, and lofts, is an early 18th century farmhouse with additional structures from the late 18th century and around 1800. The buildings are constructed from sandstone rubble that is roughly coursed and squared, featuring an irregular plinth, ashlar dressings, and quoins, all topped with stone-flagged roofs.
The farmhouse is two storeys tall and consists of seven bays in total, with the east elevation showcasing a three-bay house on the right. This section includes a central three-light stone-mullioned window, a two-light casement, and a two-light horizontal sliding sash in the first two bays, while the third bay is blank. To the left, the stable and loft have two bays and are two storeys high, featuring thin stone lintels over a boarded door and an empty window on the ground floor, along with a boarded pitching door above.
The later byre and loft on the left also have two storeys and two bays, with plain stone surrounds to the boarded door and loft door, a thin wood lintel over a boarded window on the right, and first-floor vent slits. The farmhouse has a large square chimney at the right end, while the left end building has a low-pitched roof. The right return gable features a painted stop-chamfered stone surround to a boarded Dutch door, with a large throughstone above and two courses of throughstones along with two large throughstones below the chimney. The right return gable of the adjacent higher part has a small square light in the gable peak. The rear elevation includes a one-storey extension under a catslide roof.
