Description
The garden walls to No. 8 Thorngate are from the mid-18th century and are constructed of rubble with stone coping. These high garden walls enclose the rear garden of No. 8 Thorngate, extending forward from the back of the building. They continue around the rear of the properties at Nos. 2, 4, and 6 Thorngate, connecting to the rear wall of No. 2 and extending along the south side of Gray Lane. From the east end of Gray Lane, the walls join with River View, forming the south side of that garden, and then return to create a boundary with the Demesnes before looping back to rejoin the rear of No. 8 Thorngate. The eastern section facing the Demesnes features wide square corner piers topped with low pyramidal coping, and there is a near-central keyed round-arched gateway with a boarded gate set into a similar pier. These walls are included for their group value.
