Description
This drinking fountain, located approximately 16 metres east of the Central Buildings in Staindrop, was built in 1865. It was a gift to the parish from Lady Augusta Mary Poulet in memory of Henry and Sophia, Duke and Duchess of Cleveland. The fountain is made of sandstone ashlar, with some pink stone, and is designed in the Gothic style. It features a round column about 2 metres high, standing on a moulded square base, with a clasping band and a water leaf capital. The fountain has high gabled coping adorned with coronets and commemorative inscriptions at the peaks of the gables, along with crockets positioned between the gables at the base of a narrower column finial, which has conical coping carved to resemble a roof with lucarnes. A round basin is attached to the east side of the base, and there is a damaged tap above the clasping band.
