Description

The Hog Hill Tunnel south entrance is a railway tunnel entrance arch built between 1832 and 1833 by T.E. Harrison, with R. Stephenson serving as the consulting engineer, for the Stanhope and Tyne Railroad Company. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features an ashlar arch. The structure includes a high, flat-coped retaining wall that contains a keyed arch made of voussoirs. Above the arch, there is a date stone inscribed with the year 1833 in large Roman numerals.
