Description

The Monkhouse and Coupland tombs are located approximately 5 meters east of the Church of St Mary in Barnard Castle. This group includes a chest tomb and three headstones. The chest tomb, dating from around 1832, commemorates Mary, the wife of Ebenezer Monkhouse, who died in 1832 at the age of 34, and their son Henry, who died in 1831 at the age of one. It also honors Ebenezer, a carpet manufacturer formerly of Barnard Castle, who passed away in 1865 in Nova Scotia. The chest features Tuscan angle pilasters and plain stone sides that support a round-edged top, with inscriptions displayed in long panels on the north and south sides.

The first headstone, located approximately 0.3 meters to the north, dates from the early 19th century and is dedicated to Alice, the wife of John Monkhouse, who died in 1801 at the age of 24, and to Francis, the wife of John, who died in 1808. This stone slab is about one meter high, has a shaped top, and features a carved oval patera.

The second headstone, approximately 1.5 meters to the west, commemorates Thomas Monkhouse, who died in 1817 at the age of 67, along with his family members who died in 1782 and 1814. This stone slab is about one meter high and displays an open book with drapery in a shaped head.

The third headstone, located about 0.5 meters to the south, is dedicated to John, the third son of John Coupland, who died on February 10th, 1737, at the age of 2. This stone slab is approximately 0.5 meters high, featuring a rounded top and raised margin.
