Description
The gateway, approach walls, and south wall to St. Michael's Churchyard are notable structures located in Barningham Village. The gateway, built in the later 19th century, features tooled ashlar stonework and wrought-iron gates. The walls consist of coursed rubble with some cut dressings, reflecting various constructions from the 18th and 19th centuries. The gateway is designed with patterned double gates set within a double-chamfered pointed archway, which includes foliage stops on the hoodmould.
There is a memorial inscription dedicated to Lady Augusta Milbank, who died in 1874, located in a quatrefoil panel beneath a coped gable topped with a cross fleury finial. The flat-coped walls, which are approximately 2.5 meters high, line the approach lane to the churchyard. At the far end of the left wall, there is a boarded door with a lintel dated 1840, along with late 19th-century attached piers that have gabled tops. Additionally, part of a medieval cross slab is built into the wall beside the left pier.
On the south side of the churchyard, a similar wall extends 15 meters east of the entry and continues west to the south-west corner of the churchyard. Set against the wall to the west of the entry are four 18th-century headstones and two medieval slabs, one of which features a six-arm cross, a sword, and an unidentified object.
