Description
The stable block located to the north-west of Barningham Park is a Grade II* listed building. The rear wing dates from the early 18th century, while the main range was built in the late 18th century. The rear wing features squared stone on the south and east sides, with rubble on the west, and includes cut quoins and dressings. The main range has a squared stone front and a rubble rear, with tooled ashlar quoins and dressings. The roofs are made of graduated Lakeland slate, except for the stone slates on the pent additions at the rear. The building has a T-plan layout.
The north elevation is two storeys high with eight bays. It has a slightly projecting two-bay pedimented centre and single-storey end bays. The centre features round arches in rusticated surrounds that hold flush-panelled double doors, with 6-pane sashes in architraves above and a clock in the pediment. A small wooden ridge bellcote with a pyramidal roof is present. The flanking sections have central panelled double doors with 3-pane fanlights, situated between 15-pane sashes, all under round arches, with 6-pane sashes above. All openings are framed in architraves, and there is a moulded eaves cornice with hip-ended roofs. A six-step mounting block is attached near the door on the right side. The end bays feature circular radial windows in moulded surrounds, eaves bands, and hip-ended roofs. The left return displays a four-panel door in a raised stone surround.
On the rear elevation, the central gable end of the wing has rusticated quoins and a stone stair leading to a boarded door in an architrave. There are three 12-pane sashes in architraves on the right return. Set back to the left is a pent cartshed with a four-bay arcade of round piers with block capitals supporting timber lintels, and to the right is a pent outbuilding with boarded doors.
