Description
The churchyard wall, gates, and war memorial at the Church of St Michael date from the 19th century. The wall is primarily made of plain rubble stone and serves as a retaining wall. There are three earlier pedestrian gates located at the northeast, northwest, and south entries to the churchyard. The northeast and northwest entries feature gatepiers that are built against the rubble walling, while the south gatepiers are shorter and set at the top of a broad flight of stone steps, integrated into the rubble walling. The gatepiers have plain single block plinths, flat cornices, and pyramid caps.
Each entry has paired iron gates that include dog-bars, spearhead finials, mid rails, and a top rail that ramps down, with lattice bars along each outer edge. To the right of the south gate, there is a war memorial that features a Gothic marble plaque set within a column-shafted surround, recessed in a sandstone frame topped with a pediment. The pediment is adorned with crossed swords.
