Description
This is a cistern located 800 metres west of Park Head Farmhouse, dating from the mid-18th century, with a 20th-century addition and alteration. The structure is made of ashlar stone, featuring a brick addition from the 20th century. The cistern consists of an ashlar-lined pit that measures 1 metre square and is two-thirds of a metre deep, with its sides raised in yellow brick. On the west side, there is an ashlar channel carved from solid stone that leads to a stone sink. The sink has rebates on the top and an iron bar that is leaded into one side, which originally fastened across the centre. Nearby, there are additional scattered ashlar channel blocks, and the paved surround of the cistern is broken and dislodged. Water from this cistern flowed to the pyramidal Well Head, located 100 metres to the west. This structure is an important remnant of the 18th-century water supply system for the Bishop of Durham's Palace at Auckland Castle.
