Description
The well head in Auckland Castle Park dates from the mid-18th century. It is made of ashlar stone, featuring some rustication. Located in the north-east section of the park, it is positioned prominently on the horizon, making it visible to bishops and their visitors as they approach the castle along the main drive from Park Head. The structure is pyramid-shaped, standing about 2 meters high, and is characterized by grooved rustication. The lowest course is integrated with the flat coping of a square ashlar plinth, which has a recessed band below the coping. On the north-west face of the plinth, there is a blocked small rectangular inspection place, accompanied by an iron door or grill catch on its right side.
