Description
The Vasey tomb, located approximately 8 metres south-east of the Church of St. James, dates from around 1770. It commemorates Elizabeth, the wife of Richard Vasey of Powtree, who died at the age of 24; Margaret, his second wife, who died in 1790 at the age of 39; and Richard, who died in 1792 at the age of 57. The tomb features a sandstone ashlar slab that stands about 1.5 metres high, topped with a shaped moulded design. It bears a Latin inscription that reads 'Sit in pace locus eorum', along with a rear verse that states: 'Go home all friends and leave me hear (sic)/For I must lie till Christ/appear/At whose arise/I hope/to have/A joyfull rising from/my grave.'
