Description

Lane House is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century and was enlarged in the early 18th century. It is constructed of thinly-rendered rubble with stone quoins, a boulder plinth, and ashlar dressings. The roof is covered with dark grey asbestos slates and features stone chimneys, with the left chimney raised in brick.

The house has two storeys and three bays. There is a partly-glazed door in the second bay, which is set under a flat stone lintel. Flanking square windows have similar lintels and late 19th-century sash windows. The outer bays of the first floor also have similar windows, and there is a small four-pane light above the door. The house has square end chimneys, with the left one featuring a corniced old brick addition, situated on massive external stacks with offsets. At the rear, there is a full-width outshut under a catslide roof.

Inside, the left bay shows a roughly-chamfered spine beam, likely from the earliest construction. The right part of the house has two transverse beams with cyma-stopped chamfers. There is a dogleg closed-string stair located at the rear of the centre of the house; the balustrade has been removed, but there is a short balustrade on the top landing with stick balusters and a groove-sided handrail, along with square newels. The roof features two pairs of stout, sawn upper crucks, though the apex is not accessible.
