Description

The outbuildings and wall to the east of Edge Knoll Farmhouse consist of a barn, stable, cartshed, byre, and storage areas, along with fold-yard walls. These structures date from the early to late 18th century, with some 19th-century alterations. They are built from sandstone rubble, featuring a boulder plinth, quoins, and ashlar dressings. The roofs are made of Welsh slate, stone flags, corrugated iron, and corrugated asbestos. The buildings form a U-plan layout.

The inner return of the left range is two storeys high, with six bays on the first floor and three bays on the second, along with a one-storey, one-bay section. The rear range is one storey and has four bays, while the right range is one storey with six bays on the inner return, including a lower one-bay pent extension to the sixth bay. A fold-yard wall, which has a wide central opening, divides the enclosed space.

The front of the left range features flat stone lintels over boarded doors in the second and fifth bays, and a Dutch door in the fourth bay. There is a boarded loft door at eaves height in the third bay, and similar lintels above three ground-floor and two first-floor partly-glazed openings, some of which have hit-and-miss ventilators. The first floor has a blank section in the two right end bays, except for two vent slits, and the roof is covered with Welsh slate. The lower second build has an old wood lintel over a boarded door on the left, with a square loft opening above it and a corrugated iron roof. An adjacent one-storey, one-bay structure has a boarded door and a stone-flagged roof. The other ranges display varied openings, some of which are blocked, with 19th-century doors added, mostly featuring segmental arches with voussoirs and alternate-block jambs. The roof is hipped at the returns.

The front gable of the left range shows a boulder plinth, while the front gable of the right range has double vehicle doors under a wide segmental arch with voussoirs and alternate-block jambs, along with a flat stone lintel over a boarded door in the pent extension.

The fold-yard wall is approximately one metre high, topped with flat block coping, and has rough stone piers flanking the wide central entrance. The right end of the wall abuts the right range of the buildings.
