103-105, GILESGATE

Three houses, dating from around 1700 to the late 18th or early 19th century, are situated on the north side of Gilesgate. The front elevations are painted render, with brick gables and a rear of brick, covered by roofs of Lakeland and Welsh slate. Some areas on the rear of number 104 feature pantiles. The roofs also include brick or rendered chimneys. The houses are arranged in an L-shape, with two bays per house, and are two storeys high.

Number 103, on the left, features a central half-glazed door set within simple wooden framing, flanked by two-storey canted bays with vertical glazing bars and catslide roofs. The house has banded brick chimneys, partially rendered, at the left end and in front of the central ridge, both topped with round yellow pots.

Number 104 has a half-glazed door on the right side and a shop window on the left, both within simple surrounds. Above the shop window is a wide box frame containing a sash window. The steeply pitched roof has brick gable coping and a single rendered chimney at the left end.

Number 105, which projects forward on the right, has renewed windows and a shop in the inner return, under a sash window. A canted corner bay incorporates a shop window below a sash window. The right-hand bay has a blank first floor above a plain shop window with a cornice. The roof is hipped, with brick chimneys at the rear. The buildings are included on the list for their group value.
